R. Luke DuBois – The Choice is Yours @ bitforms – 10/26/16-12/23/16

New York

R. Luke DuBois makes important work. I’ve got way too much going on emotionally in me from the election to really thoroughly explain why an exhibit by an artist around voting machines, distilling things into opposing choices, and the like, is so clearly and obviously worthwhile. If you’re near New York, just know you should go.

Jennifer Steinkamp – Still Life @ ACME. – 11/19/16-1/7/17

Los Angeles

Jennifer Steinkamp has been a favorite of mine since her 2006 survey at the San Jose Museum of Art. Side note: July 1st 2006- September 24 2006 was the best that SJMA has ever been in their entire history. Edge Conditions with Listening Post & World Processor; Kathy Aoki; and Jennifer Steinkamp’s takeover of the entire bottom floor? Utterly magical. So glad that I brought a group of 40 or 50 to see. SJMA, get your act together and do it again.

Anyhow, if you’re in LA, ACME. will be showing Still Life by Jennifer Steinkamp. I’d go see, so you better.

Frank Stella – A Retrospective @ de Young – 11/5/16-2/26/17

San Francisco

I’m not like, world’s hugest Frank Stella fan, but I couldn’t possibly not mention this exhibit! The de Young museum is showing a Frank Stella retrospective, and his late 60s geometric pieces I’ve always enjoyed. Planning to head over tomorrow or next weekend, and perhaps I’ll report back.

1010 – Eversion @ Hashimoto Contemporary – 11/3/16-11/26/16

San Francisco

My coworker invited me to this opening on Facebook. Sadly, I’m extremely bad at Facebook, and didn’t catch it in time, but WHOA. I swung by Hashimoto Contemporary today, and was utterly blown away by 1010‘s pieces. They’re beautiful and completely transporting. The show’s only up for a month but you pretty much have to go see.

Richard Serra – NJ-2, ROUNDS: EQUAL WEIGHT, UNEQUAL MEASURE, ROTATE @ Gagosian London – 10/1/16-2/25/17

London

Richard Serra‘s pieces can be so overwhelming. NJ-2 in particular looks stunning, so I’m hopeful that I can somehow end up at Gagosian Britannia Street, London before the end of February.

teamLab – Ever Blossoming @ Art Gallery of South Australia – 9/17/16-1/15/17

I heart teamLab. I’m posting a bunch of their current shows here, just to make sure if you’re near, you go see! Ever Blossoming is showing at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia. Two galleries apparently!

teamLab – Living Digital Space and Future Parks @ Pace Art + Technology – 2/6/16-12/18/16

San Francisco

This one’s particularly magical. It’s been up for a while now, and only has a month and a half left before it closes, but you still need to go. TeamLab‘s first major exhibit in the USA, at Pace Art + Technology. Bigger than a gallery, smaller than a museum, you can easily spend half a day here.

My favorite piece in the show? Crows are Chased and the Chasing Crows are Destined to be Chased as Well, Division in Perspective – Light in Dark

A fifteen year retrospective of bitforms? Here in SF? I’m way too lucky. Anyone up for popping by the reception with me? There’ll be work by Jeffrey Blondes, Daniel Canogar, R. Luke DuBois, Claudia Hart, Yael Kanarek, Beryl Korot, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Sara Ludy, Manfred Mohr, Jonathan Monaghan, Mark Napier, Tristan Perich, Quayola, Casey Reas, Daniel Rozin, Björn Schülke, Siebren Versteeg, Addie Wagenknecht, Marina Zurkow, and Zimoun. I’m not sure how this happened, but you should take some time to visit the Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco CA, USA to see the show.

Ragnar Kjartansson @ Hirshhorn 10/14/16-1/18/17

DC

I’m spending a non-trivial amount of time trying to figure out how to make it to DC before this closes. If you’re on the east coast? Bolt Bus is cheap, you better make it to Ragnar Kjartansson at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington DC, USA. Honestly, The Visitors alone is enough for me to list it, it’s one of my most favorite pieces of video art ever made.

Tom Sachs – SPACE PROGRAM: EUROPA @ YBCA SF 9/18/16-1/15/17

San Francisco

I’m so thrilled that this opened near me. I’ve gone to visit Tom’s space program probably 10-15 times since the show opened, and there’s so much to take in.

Anyhow, dry details follow. SPACE PROGRAM: EUROPA is showing at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco CA, USA. Not only do you need to go, but if you’re planning a trip, hit me up. I’d love to be your guide, and I’m happy to send you some prerequisite videos.
